How much life insurance do you need?

An estimate calculator and the reasoning you need to use it: length of support, debts, educational costs, and resources you already have.

A straightforward approach is to add up everything your income currently covers, then subtract the funds and coverage already in place. Precision is not necessary in this calculation; insurance is purchased in round-number increments, and the purpose is ensuring your family's financial stability during the most vulnerable years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Calculation = monthly income times years needed plus debts plus education minus existing savings and coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000. This is a starting estimate, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Professionals typically suggest between ten and twenty years of income protection; your specific answer depends on how many years your family would need income replacement. Households in Palm Desert with small children often prefer the longer duration because kids' schooling, childcare, and housing expenses tend to cluster during the same period.

Outstanding debts. The largest debt for most households is the mortgage. Insurance covering the full mortgage amount allows beneficiaries to decide whether to remain in the home based on their preference rather than financial pressure.

Education expenses. A modest estimate per child calculated in today's money. It is simpler to include this in your original coverage than to apply for an additional policy down the road.

Resources on hand. Cash set aside for emergencies and insurance provided through your employer are both resources to count. However, employer coverage typically vanishes when employment ends, so many people count only a percentage of it.

Once you have an amount in mind, use the quote tool to find the cost from each carrier for 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years. Purchasing slightly more than you calculated is typical since the monthly cost difference is minimal when you are younger.
